Number plates in Qatar are strictly regulated under the Traffic Law. Once your vehicle is registered, it must carry two number plates — one fixed to the front and one to the rear — before it can be driven on the road, as required by Article 12.
Importantly, Article 13 makes clear that number plates are the property of the State. You are not allowed to change their colour, shape, or any detail, and you cannot lend them to anyone. Violating this rule can result in the plates being confiscated and forfeited. This means you should never swap plates between vehicles or allow someone else to use your plates.
If you sell your vehicle, scrap it, or do not renew your license, Article 15 requires you to return the old license plates to the Licensing Authority. Failing to do so can result in penalties. If you are interested in a distinctive (special) number plate, these can be purchased and even transferred to a third party under a Ministerial decision, as outlined in Article 14.
