Can I register a car in Qatar as an expat?

Last updated 7/6/20260 viewsProvisional

Expats can register private cars in Qatar, but non-Qataris are prohibited from registering commercial vehicles like taxis or trucks under Article 3.

Yes, expats can register privately owned cars in Qatar, but there are important restrictions to be aware of. Under Article 3 of the Qatar Traffic Law (Law No. 19 of 2007), non-Qatari nationals are not permitted to register taxis, hire cars, limousines, public minibuses, or trucks. Private passenger vehicles, however, can generally be registered by expat residents.

To register your vehicle, you or your authorized representative must submit an application form along with your ownership certificate and proof of payment of the prescribed fees, as outlined in Article 4. The vehicle must also meet Qatar's approved technical standards before it can be registered, per Article 5.

Once approved, you will receive a registration certificate covering key vehicle details such as body type, colour, and chassis and engine numbers (Article 7). It's advisable to visit the Traffic Department (Motobi) or use the Metrash2 app to begin the process, and ensure your vehicle has passed a roadworthiness inspection before applying.
