If you're thinking about quitting your job in Qatar, the notice period isn't a vague suggestion — it's set by law and tied directly to how long you've been with the employer. Get it wrong and you could owe your employer money, or lose end-of-service benefits.

Quick answer

Under Qatar's Labour Law (Law No. 14 of 2004), the notice period for resignation depends on your length of service. If you've worked less than five years, you must give one month's written notice. If you've worked five years or more, it's two months. This applies to employees on indefinite contracts. For fixed-term contracts, the rules shifted after the 2020 reforms — either party can now end the contract early with the same one or two months' notice. Your contract can require longer notice, but never shorter.[1][2]

What the law actually says

Article 49 of the Labour Law sets the baseline. One month for service under five years. Two months once you cross the five-year mark.

The notice must be in writing. A WhatsApp message to your manager isn't going to cut it if things turn ugly later. Email with acknowledgment, or a signed letter, is the standard.

Here's the part most people miss: the notice period runs from the date your employer receives the resignation — not the date you wrote it, not the date you told HR verbally. Keep proof of delivery.

During the notice period, you're still a full employee. You get your salary, your allowances, and you keep accruing end-of-service gratuity. Your employer can't just stop paying you because you've announced you're leaving.

Fixed-term vs indefinite contracts

Before the August 2020 reforms (Law No. 18 of 2020 and Law No. 19 of 2020), fixed-term contracts were much harder to exit. You'd owe compensation for the remaining period if you walked away early.

That changed. Now either side can terminate any contract — fixed or indefinite — by giving written notice: one month if you've been there under five years, two months if longer. The old rule requiring you to serve out the full term of a fixed contract is gone.[2][3]

So how long is the notice period for resignation on a two-year fixed contract you've only served eight months of? One month. Same as everyone else at that service length.

Watch out: Some employers still write old-style clauses into contracts — "employee must pay three months' salary if resigning before contract end." These clauses contradict the current law and are generally unenforceable, but you may still face a fight at the Labour Court if the employer withholds your end-of-service pay.

Can you leave without serving notice?

Yes, in specific situations. Article 51 lets you terminate the contract immediately — no notice required — if the employer has:

  • Breached a material contractual or legal obligation
  • Assaulted you, or allowed a supervisor to do so
  • Committed fraud regarding the work conditions when hiring you
  • Failed to pay your wages

Walking out without one of these grounds means you've breached the contract. The employer can claim compensation equal to the notice period you skipped — typically one or two months' wages deducted from your end-of-service settlement.

The reverse is also true. Your employer can pay you in lieu of notice and ask you to leave immediately. That's legal, and the payment must cover the full notice period at your normal wage.

What happens to your visa and NOC

This is where resignation in Qatar gets more complicated than the notice period itself.

Since the labour reforms, you no longer need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your employer to change jobs. You just need to notify the Ministry of Labour through the official platform and serve your notice period correctly. The new employer handles the work permit transfer.[3]

If you're leaving the country entirely, your employer must cancel your work visa after your last working day. You have a grace period — currently 90 days — to either transfer sponsorship or exit Qatar.

Frankly, the notice period itself is the easier bit of resignation. The paperwork around visa cancellation, final settlement calculation, and ticket entitlement is where disputes actually land. Keep every pay slip, your contract, and written confirmation of your resignation date.
