How to Check Exit Permit Status in Qatar

Last updated 10/22/20260 viewsProvisional

Check your exit permit status via Qatar MOI's Metrash2 app or portal.moi.gov.qa. Most private-sector workers don't need permits—just notify your employer 72 hours before travel.

How to Check Exit Permit Status in Qatar

If you're an expatriate worker in Qatar wondering whether you can board that flight next week, this is the question that matters. Since the 2020 reforms, most private-sector workers no longer need employer permission to leave — but "most" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Here's how to check exit permit status in Qatar for the rules that actually apply to you, and where to verify before you pack.

The quick answer

To check your exit permit Qatar MOI status, use the Ministry of Interior (MOI) Metrash2 app or the MOI website (portal.moi.gov.qa) under "Inquiries → Exit Permit Inquiry." Enter your QID (Qatar ID). If you're a private-sector worker covered by Law No. 13 of 2018, no exit permit is required for ordinary travel — you only need to notify your employer 72 hours in advance. Exit permits still apply to military personnel, some government employees, and anyone subject to a travel ban (court order, debt, or pending case).

Who still needs an exit permit

The 2018 reform (Law No. 13 of 2018, amending Law No. 21 of 2015 on the entry, exit and residence of expatriates) removed the exit-permit requirement for roughly 95% of private-sector workers. Ministerial Decision No. 95 of 2019 then cleaned up what was left.

Who's still in the net:

  • Members of the Qatari armed forces.
  • Workers in sensitive government or ministerial roles (the specific list sits with each employer, capped at 5% of staff and filed with the Ministry of Labour).
  • Domestic workers under Law No. 15 of 2017 — technically they must notify, not seek permission, but practice is messier. Honestly, this is where people get stuck most often.
  • Anyone with an active travel ban, which is a separate beast entirely (more below).

So when is an exit permit Qatar required? Only for the categories above. If you're a standard private-sector employee on a work residence permit, you don't need one. You need to tell your employer you're leaving. That's it. [1][2]

How to check exit permit status in Qatar online

Three ways, ranked by what actually works.

1. Metrash2 app (fastest). Download from the App Store or Google Play. Log in with your QID and the password tied to your mobile number registered with MOI. Go to Residency → Exit Permit → Inquiry. If you're on the exempt list, the screen will tell you no permit is required. If a permit was requested (for the restricted categories), you'll see pending, approved, or rejected.

2. MOI web portal — the exit permit Qatar online check. Visit portal.moi.gov.qa, choose English, and go to E-Services → Inquiries → Exit Permit Inquiry for Expatriates. Enter your QID. No login required for the basic lookup. This is the fastest way to check my exit permit Qatar from a laptop abroad.

3. Call 109. The MOI service centre handles exit permit queries. Have your QID ready. Useful if the app throws an error on travel day, which it occasionally does.

A quick warning: an "exit permit" check and a "travel ban" check are not the same inquiry. The MOI portal has a separate screen for travel bans — and that's the one that catches people at the airport.

Watch out: Even without an exit permit requirement, a court-issued travel ban will stop you at Hamad International. Debt cases, pending criminal matters, and family law disputes (child custody especially) are the usual sources. Check both.

How to check if I need an exit permit in Qatar

Short version: open Metrash2 or the MOI portal, run the Exit Permit Inquiry against your QID, and read the result. If the screen returns "no permit required," you're in the exempt category and the 72-hour employer notification is your only obligation. If it returns a permit record, you're in one of the restricted groups and the permit's status governs your travel.

If you're unsure whether your employer has classified you under the 5% restricted list, ask HR in writing. They're required to disclose it. The classification is filed with the Ministry of Labour and isn't a secret.

Dual-check both inquiries 48 hours before your flight. Takes 3 minutes. Saves a ruined trip.

How to get an exit permit in Qatar (restricted categories)

If you fall under the military, sensitive-government, or domestic-worker categories, the employer or sponsor files the exit permit request through Metrash2 or the MOI employer portal. You don't file it yourself.

What to do:

  1. Request the permit from your employer at least 7 working days before travel.
  2. The employer submits via their MOI account; the system issues a decision, usually within 72 hours.
  3. If approved, the permit is linked to your QID — no paper document needed at the airport.
  4. If rejected or ignored, appeal to the Expatriates' Exit Grievances Committee at the MOI under Article 7 of Law No. 13 of 2018. The committee is supposed to decide within 3 working days.

A multiple exit permit in Qatar (for frequent travellers in restricted roles) can be requested by the employer for a fixed period — commonly 6 or 12 months — covering unlimited trips within that window. Same submission channel, different option in the Metrash2 menu.

Vehicle exit permit Qatar — the separate one

Driving your own car across the Abu Samra border into Saudi Arabia? That's a different permit, issued by the General Directorate of Traffic, not the Expatriate Affairs department. You need:

  • A valid vehicle registration (istimara) in your name, or an authorisation letter from the owner.
  • No outstanding traffic fines on the vehicle.
  • Valid insurance covering GCC travel.
  • The vehicle exit permit itself, issued via Metrash2 under Traffic → Vehicle Services → Vehicle Exit Permit.

The permit is typically valid for the specific trip dates you declare. Don't confuse this with your personal exit permit status — they're independent checks, and the border will ask for both.

Checking for a travel ban

A travel ban (منع من السفر) can be imposed by a court, the Public Prosecution, or in some cases the MOI itself under Article 7 of Law No. 21 of 2015. Common triggers: a bounced cheque under Article 357 of the Penal Code, an unpaid bank loan, a pending labour dispute where the employer filed a counterclaim, or a civil judgment against you.

To check:

  • Metrash2: Services → Travel Ban Inquiry.
  • MOI portal: E-Services → Inquiries → Travel Ban Inquiry.
  • In person: Search and Follow-up Department at MOI headquarters in Doha. Bring your QID.

If a ban exists, the system usually shows the case number and the issuing authority but not the full details. For those, go to the relevant court or prosecution office — or get legal help to pull the file. See our broader notes on visa and residency questions for related issues.

How to block an exit permit in Qatar (as a creditor or claimant)

The flip side — you're owed money or have a pending case against someone and want to stop them leaving. You cannot block an exit permit directly. What you can do:

  • File a case (civil, commercial, labour, or criminal) in the appropriate Qatari court.
  • Petition the court or Public Prosecution for a precautionary travel ban as part of the proceedings.
  • The judge or prosecutor decides. If granted, the order is transmitted to the MOI and flagged against the person's QID at all exit points.

Private parties don't have standing to block anyone unilaterally. The ban has to come through a judicial or prosecutorial order. Lawyers typically file this as a precautionary measure alongside the main claim.

What to do if the system says you're blocked

Three scenarios, three different responses.

Exit permit shows "pending" or "rejected" (restricted categories only): contact HR. They filed it, they can push it. If they're sitting on it unreasonably, appeal to the Expatriates' Exit Grievances Committee as noted above.

Travel ban from a court case: resolve the underlying matter — settle the debt, post a bank guarantee, or get the court to lift the ban. This isn't a same-day fix. Plan weeks, not days.

Travel ban you didn't know about: this happens more than you'd think, especially with old cheque cases or dormant loans. Get the case number from the MOI inquiry, then go to the relevant court's enforcement department (قسم التنفيذ). Settle or contest. Only then does the ban come off the system, and even then expect 24-48 hours before airport systems update.

Don't book a flight until the MOI inquiry comes back clean. Airlines won't refund you for being turned away at immigration.
